The Importance of Finding a Good Teacher – Part 2

In my video The Importance of Finding A Good Teacher I talked about how a teacher can guide you in your learning in order to avoid acquiring bad habits. In this post I want to focus on structured learning and how a teacher can help you stay focused. Your teacher sees your playing and identifies deficiencies that need to be addressed in order to improve. Using this knowledge, your teacher develops a course of study that will help you

  1. Realize your deficiency

  2. Understand how to overcome the deficiency

  3. Develop a plan to, over time, remove the deficiency

Your teacher is best one to keep you on track. It’s so easy to start to practice and find yourself drifting away from your practice routine and playing the things you already know. There’s a difference between playing “for fun” and practicing. That’s not to say practicing shouldn’t be fun (It should be!). But the way to improve is through focused practice based on a well thought out plan. Your teacher can do that for you. And if you lose sight of your goals and the way to achieve them, your teacher is there to guide back on the correct path.

Remember, your teacher was at the same stage of development as you at one time. Your teacher has the benefit of hindsight and can help you to progress quickly and hopefully avoid some of the pitfalls that are easy to get stuck in without the guidance of a good teacher.
